Total VPN is a great VPN provider; although a relative newcomer to the market, they have delivered a product that is not only very simple to use – it also packs a punch when it comes to features.
Website: It is clear that a considerable amount of time has been spent on the website of Total VPN, it’s incredibly easy to navigate and each informative part, seemingly provides the perfect morsel of information. From the ‘get go’ their message is around streaming/accessing content (Let’s be honest, it’s what most of us want) but they do not fail to address some of the more important uses or a VPN, in their rather attractive pages linked to from the footer.
Plans and Pricing: The guys at TotalVPN keep their plans and pricing super simple; 2 plans is what you’ll find – one for a totally free account (for life!), and the other, a premium plan. The premium plan offers monthly, annual and biennial terms – as you would expect, the longer the commit, the cheaper the equivalent monthly price. Plans start at $4.95/mo (2years upfront) and reach $9.95/mo paid monthly.
Features: Being a relative newcomer, Total VPN do not have the network coverage of some of their more well-known competitors, however, they do still have a rather impressive offering. Their Network covers 30+ countries (all the key ones are covered in terms of streaming) and they appear to be adding new locations pretty regularly. The core parts of their product offer exactly the same features as even the most established players.
Security & Protocols: All the major protocols are on offer from Total VPN, as you’d expect from a company listed anywhere near the top of our rankings. PPTP, OpenVPN, L2TP/IPSec and IKEv2 are all available to users. SSTP is listed on their website as ‘coming soon’. The protocol suite offered by Total VPN is very competitive and provides users with a suitable protocol for any type of internet activity. Total VPN do not keep logs of user activity and do not track which websites you visit. Similarly to most of their competitors, TotalVPN does record the IP that you use to connect to their network and monitor how much bandwidth you are using.
Customer Support: Support at Total VPN is offered across a couple of different methods. You can reach their team via email and live chat 24/7 365 and when tested, the email ticket response time was impressively just over 2 hours and the live chat test returned an immediate response from their support team. The support offered was very acceptable and the support agents seemed comfortably knowledgeable around the product and it’s infrastructure. TotalVPN’s support center/knowledgebase is pretty informative as well, particularly concerning the manual configuration articles and the frequently asked questions.
Customer Dashboard: The customer dashboard (web) is nicely laid out and very uncluttered. Users can manage their account, subscriptions and carry out a number of other useful tasks. The design is simplistic and provides great user experience.
Desktop Client: The desktop clients offered by TotalVPN are really the most user-friendly in the industry and it is clear that a considerable amount of UI/UX work has been invested here. Unlike so many of the companies that we review, Total VPN manage to keep the interface super simple and intuitive – everything feels (and is) only a quick click away. There is currently no Linux desktop client which costs them some marks here, but overall, it is very difficult to fault their desktop clients.
Mobile: The mobile applications on offer mirror a lot of the style and usability of the desktop clients (I like a consistent user experience, across platforms). The apps (iOS and Android) offer PPTP and L2TP/IPSec, which is the industry benchmark and are exceptionally easy to use. Unlike a number of their competitors apps, there are no clunky profile installation processes, the app just seems to take care of that itself.
Conclusion: To conclude, it is refreshing to see a company take such an holistic view towards the product. They haven’t given one part of the product insanely more focus than another and what that has resulted in, is a very balanced, very intuitive user journey from site visit, to streaming a movie in another country. The pricing is ultra competitive and the feature set is strong enough to carry it over the line as one of our most recommended VPN provider.
